Data-centre projects request nearly 2,900 megawatts of grid capacity in Estonia

In short

By the end of September seven data-centre projects had applied to Elering for grid connections totalling nearly 2,900 megawatts, Invest in Estonia reports. An AI deployment by Nebius at Greenergy Data Centers in Hüüru is due to come online later this year.

Planned data-centre projects across Estonia are drawing potential investment of billions of euros, Invest in Estonia reports, citing Ehitusuudised. By the end of September seven data-centre projects had applied to the transmission system operator Elering for grid connections, together asking for nearly 2,900 megawatts — almost twice Estonia's previous electricity consumption record. Elering has not named the applicants.

The most advanced project is in Hüüru. A 22 MW artificial-intelligence deployment at Greenergy Data Centers is due to start later this year as the first AI infrastructure deployment in the Baltics of Nebius, a Nasdaq-listed AI cloud company. Greenergy Data Centers wants to raise its connection capacity to as much as 200 megawatts.

MCF Group Estonia runs the facility; the Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund holds the majority of its shares. Tensor Estate became a shareholder in July and, together with UG Investments, is bringing Estonian investors into the project. The Estonian entrepreneurs involved have planned an additional investment of approximately EUR 100 million. In summer, we said that Hüüru is a long-term project for us, and now we are showing that through our actions, said Miko-Ove Niinemäe, co-founder of Tensor Estate.

According to the article, Elering is building connection points for the facility, which will connect to the Harku substation with a first-phase rating of 12 megawatts and a planned increase to 18 megawatts once the Harku–Lihula–Sindi high-voltage line is finished.

What this means for an Estonian entrepreneur

The projects show international technology companies working in Estonia through Estonian operating companies and Estonian co-investors. A foreign company planning its own Estonian entity, or a supplier to these projects, can form an Estonian company remotely and have it ready, with its registered address and contact person, before contracts are signed.
